You guessed? yea... this is it... The Cathédrale Notre Dame de Reims!

Some Hisory... (only for those interested :D)

A Personal Opinion?

In our opinion, one of the major criterions that emphasize the architecture of the cathedral is its many sculptures. Indeed, the sculptures are integrated in building an architectural element, not just as for aesthetic purposes. Moreover, the strength of the building is accentuated by the vertical lines. However, three major horizontal lines give the façade a reassuring stability. Not to forget, the rosasse in stained glass at the center of the façade gives a focuse point to the observer. Last but not least, the repetitive ornaments go along with the structural elements to found the cathedral.

SOME HISTORY...

The cathedral of reims of the XIII century was renovated in the year 1275 by the four major French architects Jean d'Orbais, Jean-le-Loup, Gaucher de Reims and Bernard de Soissons. That way, the cathedral of Reims came to have its presently known architecture. This cathedral was purposed to be dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Moreover, this cathedral was involved in many Kings of France’s coronation.

Other Facts...

The height of the height of the vault is 38 meters. The general impression from the outside, like all Gothic churches, is that of a major push into the sky. Two of its towers peak at nearly 82 meters high.

The highest point is the angle of the angel bell located above the apse to 87 meters. The orientation of the cathedral is along the South-West North-East axis.

The Cathedral of Reims is very rich in its statues. The Cathedral is said to be greater than most other European cathedrals. 2303 statues ornament the cathedral. The building is distinguished by a rare unique style, despite the fact that the construction stretched over two hundred years (in the thirteenth century). Just above the main door, the coronation of the Virgin.

The Gothic architecture uses broken arcs; one cannot define an architectural form, or any other art, but one may distinguish its technical characteristics. The arc, the flying buttress were used well before the onset of the first Gothic buildings.

Many other architectural and decorative processes were used in the gothic era. The aspect ratio of the nave enhances or diminishes the sensation of height of the vault. The shape of cells, the decoration of capitals, the proportions of the levels (arcades, clerestory windows, heights)... all involved in the expression of the aesthetics of Gothic: determination of height, vertical search alternation of void and batteries, multiple playing on lights and colors, etc…

How would YOU rate it?

Many think the Reims catedral is a serious competitor of Paris' Notre Dame cathedral.

In this page, all kind of information on the Reims cathedral will be provided. This way, a comparaison between the two cathedrals will be possible (You can find our collaborator's blog on the Notre Dame de Paris' cathedral).

Above, a picture of the site of the cathedral.Taken by satellite imagery (google maps).

"Notre-Dame Cathedral in Reims, France, under a stormy sky. Said to be one of the ten largest in the world, which is not surprizing given the number of kings crowned there".

Up next are some pictures of the interior of the cathedral...
